Renowned Chicago-area artist Alex Ross painted one of two dust-jacket covers for "Heroes," a new hardcover collection of comic-book stories based on the NBC television show of the same name.

The pieces were created for the official "Heroes" Web site, www.nbc.com/heroes, and have never before appeared in print.

The book, published by DC Comics and released in comics shops and online Wednesday, features 34 tales and an introduction by actor Masi Oka, who plays the time-traveling Hiro Nakamura on the show.

A widespread release will follow in about a week. Ross' work has appeared in numerous comic books, most recently DC's "Justice," and in the film "Spider-Man 2."
