A Lake County jury deliberated about two hours Tuesday before finding a former Round Lake Beach man guilty of child molesting.
Aurelio Duran, 46, will face up to 30 years in prison for predatory sexual assault of a child when he is sentenced April 28.
Assistant State's Attorney Bolling Haxall said Duran raped a 9-year-old girl as she slept in the summer of 2001.
The girl testified Tuesday that when she first encountered Duran the following morning, he told her she should never tell anyone what had happened the night before.
The girl said nothing about the attack until 2007, when she told the story to a pair of cousins she had not previously met while visiting relatives in Wisconsin.
Haxall also told the jury of seven men and five women seated before Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak that a physical exam of the girl in 2007 confirmed she had been raped.
Assistant Public Defender Karen Levi argued the girl had numerous opportunities during the nearly six years before she first spoke about the rape, to tell close friends and teachers.
Levi contended it was illogical the girl would reveal something so intimate to strangers, and suggested she was motivated by anger against Duran.
Duran left the area in 2005, and was believed to be in Mexico, but was arrested in Texas in 2008 on the outstanding warrant.
