HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher" returns for its eighth season at 9 p.m. today on the premium-cable channel. It'll be interesting to see if Scott Lee Cohen shows up on Maher's national political radar. HBO also tries a new experiment with "The Ricky Gervais Show," debuting at 8 p.m. today; it's an animated version of Gervais' podcast.
'Double Duty' history
Comcast SportsNet Chicago is marking Black History Month with profiles of black Chicago sports stars on "SportsNite" at 6:30 and 10 p.m. and "SportsRise" at 5 a.m. all through February. White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams gets the spotlight at 6:30 p.m. today, but even better, from a historical perspective, is the late Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, a Negro League star who got his nickname from Damon Runyon for being both a pitcher and a catcher, and who was one of the sweetest souls you could have ever hope to meet. He gets his profile at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, on CSNC.
History in the present
WGN Channel 9 turns Black History Month to present-day concerns when Antwan Lewis presents the report "Safe Passage," looking at youth violence and areas where it's become unsafe to walk in Chicago. It airs on the 9 p.m. newscast on Monday, Feb. 22.
Best of 'Potter'
All right, Waste Watchers, this week we switch gears and celebrate not the worst, but the best: the best Harry Potter movie. "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" is the most self-contained and intricately plotted of J.K. Rowling's works, which makes for both the best book and best film of the series. Take a break from the Olympics and see for yourself if you haven't already at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, on WLS Channel 7.
