ROCK ISLAND -- Authorities say 22-year-old Amos Collins of Rock island has pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a 16-year-old Liberian immigrant who was found dead in his apartment in July.
Collins, who is a native of Liberia himself, pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim between the age of 13 and 16. In exchange for his plea, Rock Island County Circuit Court Judge Michael Meersman agreed to drop a count of criminal sexual assault by force.
Collins is scheduled for sentencing March 17.
Collins was arrested July 28, a day after the body of alleged victim Naomie Wehjalah was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his apartment after leaving a note saying Collins had raped her. Her death was ruled a suicide.
