Lawmakers were being evacuated to the Capitol basement early this evening because of possible tornadoes descending on Springfield, Illinois.

The state House was in the midst of debate when lawmakers were told to stop and head for the basement. The sirens also sounded as there was a closed door meeting on state construction between the governor and key lawmakers.

Lawmakers are pulling overtime tonight as they attempt to craft a budget for next year before the statutory deadline of midnight on Saturday.

After about 45 minutes, lawmakers were cleared to return.
