Just two weeks ago, Schaumburgs girls basketball team dropped a 49-36 decision at Fremd.
But Tuesday night, Saxons coach Ashley Berggren watched her team rise to the occasion against the four-time defending Mid-Suburban West champs.
Senior Amanda Kelly scored a game-high 20 points while junior Carly Brossard (12 points) and sophomore Jada Blackwell (10) also reached double figures as the host Saxon topped the Vikings 46-37.
Fremd (19-7, 5-2) is tied for first with Palatine (19-5, 5-2) in the West.
Schaumburg improved to 12-10 and 3-4.
We changed up our defense this time so we could do a better job on Ashley McConnell (12 points) and Haley Gorecki (14), Berggren said. Those are two great players for Fremd.
(Sophomore) Brittany Reinhardt (2 steals) and (senior) Riley Williams (3 rebounds, 2 steals) matched up with them and did a great a job holding them down. It was great defense by our entire team.
Brossard pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, 11 on the defensive side.
Carly was all over the defensive boards, Berggren said. Amanda (Kelly) had a big night, controlling the tempo of the game. And Jada had some big buckets toward the end of the game.
Schaumburg led most of the first half. Fremd gained a 1-point lead in the third quarter but Schaumburg pulled ahead 31-26 going into the fourth quarter.
Gorecki led Fremd with 10 rebounds while Bernie Williams had 4 and Brianna Lewis 3.

I think the girls worked real hard defensively, said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. Meg (Cerniglia) set the tone with her aggressiveness and everyone worked hard to rebound.
Wheeling (7-16, 1-6) was led by sophomore Deanna Kuzmanic (8 points) and senior Brie Majkowski, who was 7-of-8 from the free throw line for all her points.
