A new Naperville business is for people who jump into the pool with their cell phone in their pocket or drop an iPod into the sink - or experience a host of other computer problems.
The Tech Shop tackles more than repairing wet electronic devices. The store at 1523 N. Aurora Road in the Riverbrook Shopping Center also repairs computers, GPS systems and gaming stations, including Xbox and PlayStation.
"We do all types of electronics repair work. We do data retrieval as well as a lot of work on gaming stations," said business owner Michael Schramer.
The shop, which opened about six weeks ago, is an extension of a franchise Schramer formerly owned in St. Charles, where he mainly repaired wet cell phones.
Phones continue to make up a large part of the new business. Schramer, of Elburn, explained that when a phone gets wet, it's important to get it in for service as quickly after it's submerged as possible.
"Pull the battery out and bring it in," he said.
Some people think that putting a phone in rice to dry it helps, but Schramer said that's not a good idea.
"This produces corrosion," he said.
The Tech Shop is also able to retrieve data from phones as well as computers.
"We also do basic repairs, including fixing buttons that don't work," he said.
The technicians do all the work at the shop.
"Most repairs can be done between three and five days. We have a 90-day warranty," said Schramer, 35.
The shop also sells refurbished cell pones and iPods and offers electronic recycling.
Before getting into the repair business, Schramer worked full-time as a co-owner of S&P Builders, a custom home-building company in Elburn. He still operates that business on the side, but when the housing market plummeted, he started looking for other options.
"I saw the economy turning," said the.
The new technology business is also an authorized wireless Internet dealer for Clear Wireless.
The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
