Santa Anita to rebuild surface

Santa Anita will completely overhaul its troubled synthetic surface in July, four months before the track hosts the Breeders' Cup.

The project calls for removing the existing asphalt base, adding a new grid base material, and treating the entire track with binder and fiber material. The process is expected to begin July 14 and last six weeks, during which there will be no training at the track.

Santa Anita lost 11 of the first 33 days of its winter meeting because the artificial surface failed to drain properly following major rainstorms and hail in January.
