The West Chicago Fire District Open House on Oct. 7 will offer family emergency preparedness seminars through the Winfield Township Citizen Corps and West DuPage Citizen Emergency Response Team. The open house, at 200 Fremont St., will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., during which the 15-minute seminars will be held on the hour. The free sessions teach families how to develop a plan to deal with the chaos of an emergency. For details, call Winfield Township at (630) 231-3591.

Aurora closes bridges

Aurora's Ohio Street Bridge, located between Rural Street and Front Street, will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Tuesday. The High Street Bridge, located between Pierce Street and Front Street, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. Engineers are doing bridge inspections during the closures.

Meeting reviews special ed

Addison Elementary District 4 will discuss its plans to provide special education services for students with disabilities who attend private and home schools within the district at 4 p.m. Oct. 10. Parents of private or home- schooled students who have been or may be identified with a disability and who reside in the district may attend. Fox Valley holds auction

Fox Valley Park District is holding its annual surplus equipment auction that runs through Oct. 4. More than 100 items are up for auction, including trucks, mowers, golf course benches, indoor drinking fountains and more. Hoops seeks sponsors

Sponsorships are available for the Hoops for Healing high school basketball tournament, scheduled for Nov. 19-20 and 23-24 at Naperville North and Oswego high schools. Hoops for Healing is an annual fundraising tournament for the Edward Cancer Center in Naperville and has raised more than $13,000 in the past two years. Sponsorships are available at three levels: Free Throw Sponsor, $100, name appears on the program; Three-Point Sponsor, $300, name/logo appears on warm-up shirts; Slam Dunk Sponsor, $500, name/logo appears on the banner to be hung in the gym.
