The St. Edward boys basketball team started fast Tuesday night and never really slowed down.
The Green Wave scored 16 of the games first 17 points, led by as many as 27 and cruised to a 73-50 Suburban Christian Conference victory over Guerin in Elgin.
Shots were going in for us in the early part of the game, which is a good thing, St. Edward coach P.J. White said. We talked all week about trying to shot off movement instead of being so stagnant. That worked out well.
Thirteen Green Wave players scored. St. Edward shot 55 percent (27-for-49) and forced 23 turnovers by the Gators. About the only thing that went wrong for the Green Wave (15-4, 4-2) was being outrebounded 33-24.
It was a home game. I didnt want to let anyone down and (my teammates) didnt either, said Davontae Elam, who led the Green Wave with 14 points. We played our hearts out tonight.
Adrian Ponce scored the first 4 points of the game. Antonio Domel added a layup as the Green Wave led 6-0 before Guerins Joe Binkowski hit 1 of 2 free throws. Danny Favela, Domel, John Butzow, Nick Duffy and Ryan Matthews all scored as the Green Wave went on a 10-0 run to take a 16-1 lead with 2:12 remaining in the first quarter.
St. Edward led 22-8 after the first quarter and 42-18 at halftime.
Butzows 3-point play with 6:13 remaining in the third quarter gave St. Edward its largest lead, 47-20.
Were pretty confident, Elam said. A few minor mistakes we need to work on in practice. Nothing too big.
Butzow finished with 13 points. Ponce had 9, all in the first half. Domel added 7, also all in the first half.
Kevin Kross led the Gators with 12 points.
