Officials at Oak Park's Unity Temple say metal thieves have stolen most of the bronze letters that had graced the exterior of the landmark Frank Lloyd Wright-designed church.

The Unity Temple Restoration Fund said Monday that someone pried off 58 of the 72 letters sometime between last Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

The letters spelled out "For the worship of God and the service of man" above the temple's two entrances.

The initial police report listed the monetary loss at $80,000, but officials are not sure of the replacement cost.

Scrap metal dealers in the Chicago area said scrap bronze is currently selling for about $2.50 a pound.

The temple was listed as one of America's 11 most endangered historic places last year, and was vandalized during restoration work in January.
