A Lake Zurich man was placed on probation for four years and ordered to complete sex offender treatment after admitting he had a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl.

Jonathan Smith, 21, pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse during a hearing Friday before Lake County Associate Judge George Bridges.

Assistant State's Attorney Ken LaRue said Smith, of the first block of Johnathon Road, was arrested by Libertyville police earlier this year while living in that community.

LaRue said Smith's mother came home to the residence she shared with her son in the 200 block of West Park Avenue on Jan. 11 and caught Smith and the girl kissing.

The woman called police, and the girl, who was also a Libertyville resident, was taken to the police station to be interviewed.

The girl told police she and Smith were in a dating relationship and that they had sex twice between Dec. 26, 2009 and the date of the interview.

Bridges also fined Smith $200 and ordered him to perform 200 hours of community service.

He also barred Smith from having any contact with females under 17 while he is on probation.

LaRue said Smith could have been sentenced to up to seven years in prison had he been convicted after a trial.
