White Sox general manager Kenny Williams is sticking by Alexei Ramirez as his shortstop. Ramirez will stay at short as Gordon Beckham moves from third base to second to accommodate recently acquired Mark Teahen.

"I personally thought it was terribly unfair, the criticism he got," Williams said of Ramirez Tuesday during the general managers meetings at O'Hare. "Of course, the lapses are somewhat frustrating, but I expect those as a young player. That's part of the development.

"For every error he made, he got to balls a lot (of other players) won't get to."

Williams seemed to think a good start can help Ramirez.

"It's not the end of the season with Alexei we have to get squared away," Williams said. "It's April and May. Now that he's two years removed from Cuba, hopefully the third year will be the charm where he can have a good April, or maybe we just leave him in Arizona and play someone else there until June. He probably would win a batting title if he didn't have to play in April.

"Alexei is better than Gordon at shortstop. Not that Gordon can't play the position. He can play the position. But Alexei is a special guy, and for him not to play for four years at the position and do what he did, that's a special feat."
