A Glen Ellyn man has been charged with eavesdropping and criminal usury, which is lending money at exorbitantly high interest rates.

Both charges against Steven Cooper, 47, also known as Moustafa Abed Elsalam Elturky, are considered Class 4 felonies and, if he is convicted, could put him behind bars for up to three years.

Officials said Cooper, of the 22W400 block of Arbor Lane, called the DuPage County sheriff's office to report a fraudulent check he received. Deputies wound up investigating his own business where the usury and eavesdropping allegedly were taking place.

Deputies did not go into detail regarding how the charges developed.

The investigation into his business practices and associates is continuing and further arrests may be forthcoming, authorities said.

Cooper's bond was set at $250,000.

Anyone with additional information regarding Cooper is asked to contact the sheriff's detective division at (630) 407-2323.
