A DuPage County grand jury handed up a five-count murder indictment Tuesday against an imprisoned felon charged with a fatal Aurora shooting.

Enrique L. Torres, 26, is accused of gunning down a man April 14, 2007 after an early morning argument in the parking lot of a motel on the city's far east side.

Police rushed to the motel parking lot on the 4200 block of Longmeadow Drive just before 6 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting the sound of gunfire. They found an unresponsive Edgar Hill lying in the parking lot, about 100 feet from the motel's main entrance.

The 35-year-old Hillside man died from multiple gunshot wounds. Detectives had scant initial leads to pursue, other than witness reports that a small silver car with two occupants sped out of the parking lot toward Ogden Avenue. Hill was not a registered motel guest.

One day later, April 15, 2007, officers arrested Torres and two teenagers on aggravated battery of a firearm charges for an unrelated crime that ended in a police pursuit and crash near Aurora's downtown. A Kane County judge sentenced Torres to 72 months in prison in 2008.

Torres was due to be paroled from Pontiac Correctional Center in April 2013, but Kane County authorities recently had him transferred back to the county jail on attempted murder charges. Details about that shooting were not immediately available late Tuesday.

Prosecutors pursued the DuPage County indictment for Hill's murder after they said police were able to link Torres to the unsolved crime through information from a confidential witness. Torres will be arraigned next month at the Wheaton courthouse.

Torres is a self-admitted gang member with a long criminal history, according to DuPage and Kane court records. His other prior prison stints date back to 2001 and involve crimes for possession of a controlled substance, stolen car, mob action and aggravated fleeing and eluding.
