A number of public events to commemorate 9/11 are planned for Friday in the Northwest suburbs:

• Bartlett: A Patriot Day ceremony led by a joint color guard from Bartlett VFW Post 11018 and American Legion 1212 takes place at 6:30 p.m. at Victory Centre, 1101 W. Bartlett Road. Commander Ed Lacey will lead the program, representatives from fire and police departments will be on hand, the Bartlett Adult Chorus will perform patriotic selections and there will be a rifle, volley and three-gun salute.

• Des Plaines: The local fire and police departments, American Legion Post 36 and VFW Post 2992 will host a Patriot Day ceremony at 8 a.m. outside the Civic Center, between City Hall and the police station, 1420 Miner Street. The program will include an honor and color guard, speakers, reflections, a presentation of wreaths and patriotic song performances. Parking available at Metropolitan Square Garage.

• Hoffman Estates: A special service is planned for 5 p.m. at Village Hall, 1900 Hassell Road. Hoffman Estates resident and Schaumburg Fire Department Lt. John Schneidwind will be the speaker of honor.

• Inverness: The Palatine Rural Fire Protection District hosts a remembrance that will include a brief program and a display of materials from ground zero at 7:30 p.m. at the firehouse at Palatine and Ela roads.

• Mount Prospect: The fire and police departments host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Public Safety Building, 112 E. Northwest Highway. The ceremony will feature speeches and a bell and bagpipe ceremony.

• Rolling Meadows: Community Church of Rolling Meadows, 2720 Kirchoff Road, host a free 9/11 concert, "Let Freedom Ring" at 7 p.m. Friday. Participants include the Harper Festival Chorus A Capella Ensemble and several church choirs from Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights and Palatine. Admission is free. Information: (847) 255-5510 or

• Palatine: A Patriot Day Ceremony takes place at 9 a.m. at the Palatine Firefighters Memorial at North Brockway and West Slade streets downtown. The fire department Honor Guard will present the flag and several local dignitaries will speak.
