A Buffalo Grove man pleaded guilty Tuesday to having sex with a young girl who came forward after her attacker had been arrested in January on child pornography charges.

Michael Newby, 53, faces up to 10 years in prison when he returns to court Sept. 23 to be sentenced.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Mary Stanton said Buffalo Grove police, acting on a tip from the FBI, went to Newby's house in the 900 block of Hilldale Lane on Jan. 14 to search for child pornography.

Investigators did find the pornography in Newby's computers, Stanton said, and he was charged with possession of child pornography.

After those charges were filed, Stanton said, investigators contacted several young women known to have associated with Newby when they were children.

One women, who Stanton said is now 22 years old, told police she had been repeatedly molested by Newby between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31, 2000.

As a result, Newby was charged with criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

On Tuesday, Newby pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault in an agreement that limits the maximum amount of time he can spend in prison to 10 years.

Stanton also agreed to drop all the other charges against Newby in exchange for his guilty plea.

Newby remains in the Lake County jail on $40,000 bond.
