A McHenry County man was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to a reduced charge stemming from a near-fatal attack on a female acquaintaince in January.

Bill V. Canales, 42, of Pistakee Highlands, admitted guilt to an aggravated battery charge as part of a plea deal in which county prosecutors agreed to dismiss an attempted murder charge initially filed after the Jan. 23 incident.

Authorities said Canales repeatedly stabbed a 29-year-old Fox Lake woman and struck her in the head with a shovel during an altercation that erupted when she agreed to drive him to his place of employment in the 6800 block of State Park Road near Spring Grove.

Canales, captured two days later at a Grayslake hotel, also suffered stab wounds during the fight, investigators said.

The incident ended when the woman, bleeding from several stab wounds to her torso, broke free from Canales and stumbled to Route 12 where a passing motorist stoppd to help her.

Canales initially was charged with attempted murder, a Class X felony that would have landed him six to 30 years in prison if found guilty.
