A truck driver was killed after being hit by a van during a 1 a.m. accident Thursday after his semi broke down in the southbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway near Hinsdale.

Kenneth A. Brown, 41, of Crest Hill, was hit by the male van driver as he was outside of his truck on the tollway trying to reattach his semi-trailer to the cab of the vehicle, Illinois State Police officials said.

The accident happened on the interstate near the Cermak Road exit, police officials said.

The truck was stopped in the fourth, southbound lane, but did not have any running lights on the rear of the trailer, officials said.

The van driver swerved to avoid hitting the truck when he hit the driver. Its also been reported the truck driver was trying t put out road flares and triangles, but police could not confirm those reports.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office at 1:07 a.m. The driver of the van did not suffer any injuries, police said, and he was not charged in the incident.

Two lanes of the tollway were closed until about 6 a.m. while the incident was investigated.
