A Mundelein man was placed on probation for 30 months Monday after he admitted trying to rape a woman at an underage drinking party.

Kevin Hanahan, 20, was also fined $1,000 and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service after pleading guilty to criminal sexual abuse.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Tim Niehus said Hanahan, of the 400 block of Hillside Drive, was at the party in a Mundelein house on July 19, 2008.

A woman drinking at the party passed out and was taken to an upstairs bedroom, Niehus said.

She awoke to find Hanahan on top of her and trying to remove her clothes, Niehus said.

The woman told Hanahan to stop, Niehus said, and then ran from the room screaming.

Hanahan was originally charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, but Niehus agreed to reduce the charge in exchange for his guilty plea.

Niehus told Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak that he had discussed the negotiation with the victim and the victim was "quite adamant" in her request that Hanahan not be sent to prison.

Potkonjak signed off on the deal, but warned Hanahan that he could still face up to three years in prison if he violates his probation by having contact with the victim.
