A former teacher at Antioch Grade School has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Kenneth Lee Johnson, 60, was arrested in January after the FBI notified local authorities they suspected Johnson had child pornography on his home computer.

Police took a search warrant to Johnson's apartment in the 400 block of Main Street in Wauconda and found more than 1,000 photographs and 100 video clips of child pornography.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Mary Stanton said among the photographs were some of a boy believed to be about 15 or 16 years old who Johnson admitted he had paid to pose for him.

Johnson was not charged with producing child pornography because the photos were taken about nine years ago, Stanton said, outside the statute of limitations on prosecution.

Johnson taught social studies at the Antioch school since 1989, but resigned his position shortly after his arrest.

He pleaded guilty in April and Circuit Judge John Phillips agreed to consider placing Johnson on probation and to sentence him to no more than four years in prison if probation was not appropriate.

Stanton said a sex offender evaluation of Johnson concluded he had little chance of success in treatment because he had been involved with pornography for more than 30 years.

At the time of his arrest, Johnson also claimed to have molested as many as 75 boys, but sheriff's investigators interviewed scores of people Johnson named and were unable to confirm any abuse.

Stanton said Johnson is still the subject of an investigation into his claim that he shared pornography with two other unidentified men, and additional charges are possible.

The sentencing hearing took place Monday at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan.
