The Cubs on Monday recalled outfielder Sam Fuld from Class AAA Iowa and placed infielder Aaron Miles on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended right elbow.

The DL assignment is retroactive to June 21.

Fuld, 27, was batting .286 with a .396 on-base percentage at Iowa. He had 16 doubles, 8 triples, 20 stolen bases and 27 RBI. He has 32 walks and 22 strikeouts.

The Cubs decided to bring up Fuld instead of infielder Bobby Scales, who had a couple of stints with the big club this season.

"We felt that we had some infield depth now with (Ryan) Freel back," general manager Jim Hendry said from Pittsburgh, where the Cubs are taking on the Pirates in a three-game series. "Sammy has been really hot. This will let Lou (manager Piniella) mix and match with outfield defense until Reed (Johnson) comes back."

Johnson is on the DL with back spasms, and Fuld can play all of the outfield spots.

Fuld broke into the big leagues in 2007, getting into 14 games after a September call-up. He made a remarkable catch against the wall at Wrigley Field on Sept. 22 to rob the Pirates' Nyjer Morgan of extra bases. When Fuld came to bat, the Wrigley crowd chanted, "Sammy, Sammy."

Last season, Fuld split time between Iowa and Class AA Tennessee.

Hendry said he continues to look for help for a team that entered Monday a season-low 2 games under .500 at 35-37.

"You keep looking," Hendry said. "You hope you have a good week, and you know that we're going to get Ramy (third baseman Aramis Ramirez) back soon, and Reed and (reliever) Angel Guzman are coming back soon."

Miles, who had shoulder problems in spring training, has had a poor start. He's batting .203 with an OBP of .240. He has no homers and 4 RBI in the first season of a two-year, $4.9 million contract.
