A homeless man seen roaming the streets of Cary, Crystal Lake and Woodstock, is accused of trying to steal cigarettes from a disabled woman Tuesday in Fox River Grove, police said.

William R. Brandt, 47, with an unknown address, has been charged with robbery, disorderly conduct and two counts of battery.

The arrest stems from an incident about 5:10 p.m. Tuesday when, police said, the 48-year-old woman was smoking a cigarette outside the Fox River Grove Memorial Library in the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue.

Brandt asked her for a cigarette and when she said no, grabbed her arm and tried to reach into her pocket for one, said Sgt. Mike Domagala.

Pedestrians passing by scared Brandt and he began walking away from the woman, Domagala said. Officers responding to the scene arrested Brandt a short distance away.

Brandt was unable to post 10 percent of a $15,000 bond and remained at the McHenry County jail Thursday pending his next court day May 21.

If found guilty of robbery, he faces a maximum two and five years in prison.
