ComEd officials said a squirrel died Friday morning after it entered a manned, outdoor substation and came into contact with a grid that controlled power for 12,000 customers, ComEd spokeswoman Alicia Zatkowski said.

The customers who lost power at about 6:25 a.m. were in Palatine, Palatine Township, Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates, Inverness and Lake Zurich.

Officials were able to restore power to the 12,000 customers by 8:48 a.m.

"Sometimes, this sort of thing happens," she said. "We try to protect against wildlife as much as possible, but every once in awhile, they get in and cause damage."

Officials are still trying to determine how the squirrel was able to enter the substation and will repair any damages.
