Beware Ides of March
Jim Peterik, best known as the lead singer of "Vehicle" by the Ides of March back in the '60s, plays a gig with his new smooth-jazz project Lifeforce at the College of Lake County this weekend. Jazz singer Lisa McClowry joins him as he improvises off "Vehicle" and "Eye of the Tiger" and other tunes.
Jim Peterik's Lifeforce performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 14, in the Mainstage Theater of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the College of Lake County's Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Warming up Irish airs
Chicago native Liz Carroll and her Irish performance partner John Doyle put in an appearance at the Metropolis Performing Arts Center Monday to warm up for their trip to Washington, D.C., to sing Irish airs for President Obama as part of the White House St. Patrick's Day luncheon the following day.

Velvet birthday bash
Fred Anderson, one of the most important figures in Chicago jazz, both as a saxophonist and as owner of the Velvet Lounge on the South Side, kicks off a weeklong celebration of his 80th birthday when he joins the AACM Great Black Music Ensemble onstage Sunday, March 15. Beginning Wednesday, various players and groups will pay tribute to Anderson with nightly sets leading toward his return to the stage for his actual birthday bash Sunday, March 22.
