The Chicago Red Stars are set to announce the signing of Brazilian soccer player Cristiane, the Daily Herald learned Friday afternoon.

Cristiane, who with teammate Marta led a flashy Brazilian attack to an Olympic silver medal last fall, was the Red Stars' top pick when the fledgling Women's Professional Soccer league assigned international players last fall. She is considered one of the top three women's players in the world.

"Fantastic news," Red Stars coach Emma Hayes said. "I 'm just delighted that she'll be joining us shortly."

Cristiane likely will join the team in preseason training in Florida after getting her visa worked out.

"Her finishing ability stands out," added Hayes, who scouted Cristiane at the Olympics in China. "She's quite possibly the best goal scorer in the world at the moment. She's consistently scored a lot of goals at the major tournaments.

"She's everything you'd want from a Brazilian. She's full of flair and flamboyance. Our fans will love to watch her play. She's a true artist of the game."

Cristiane, 23, is one of the last international players to sign with the league. She signed a one-year contract.

The Red Stars' home opener is April 19 at Toyota Park.
