A Round Lake Park man was placed on probation for 30 months Friday after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography.

John Hedges, 41, was also fined $1,000 and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Mary Stanton said Hedges' former girlfriend found a DVD containing pornographic images in Hedges' home in the 900 block of Barbara Court on Sept. 21, 2007.

The woman notified police who obtained a search warrant for Hedges' home and removed around 35 DVDs and a computer.

Stanton said numerous lewd photographs of girls between the ages of 6 and 16 were found on the DVDs.

In accepting the negotiated plea, Circuit Judge Fred Foreman told Hedges he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Foreman also ordered Hedges to allow his computer to be inspected by probation officers so his Internet use can be monitored.

Stanton said Hedges could have faced up to five years in prison if he had been convicted after a trial.
