Lecture for families

DuPage County families can collect ideas on how to become closer when psychologist Robert Brooks visits Lake Park High School at 6 p.m. today, Oct. 27, at the school's West Campus, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Roselle. Brooks will address themes such as resilience, self-esteem, motivation and family relationships. He is a clinical psychologist and faculty member at Harvard Medical School and has co-authored several books. All community members are invited. For details, call (630) 295-5402.

Show features local business

Ballydoyle Irish Pub & Restuarant's use of recycled materials has earned it a featured spot on "Total Wrecklamation," a new show on the Discovery Channel Network, Planet Green. The show will air at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, with a premiere celebration taking place in the Downers Grove restaurant at 7:30 p.m. The episode, titled "The Luck of the Irish," highlights owner Phil Cullen's use of reclaimed wood, church pews, bars and other salvaged goods on the inside of the pub.

Volunteer awards coming up

Aurora is accepting nominations for the city's Community Volunteer Awards through Nov. 14. Not-for-profit groups, churches, schools and service clubs in Aurora are asked to submit nominations for their top three volunteers. All nominees will be recognized and one will be named "Aurora's Volunteer of the Year" at a reception with Mayor Thomas Weisner at 6 p.m. Dec. 4. Nomination forms are available at the city's Web site at or by calling (630) 844-4731.

Send military care packages

If you have a family member or loved one serving in the U.S. military, Community High School in West Chicago would like to recognize their service for Veterans Day by sending them a "WeGo Care Pack." With help from VFW Post 6791, the school's community leadership class has identified useful items to be collected, which then will be sent along with cards and letters of appreciation. To submit a name, e-mail Mary Ellen Daneels at or send a fax with the name and address of the care package recipient to (630) 293-8119 by Tuesday, Oct. 28.
