A West suburban council of local governments has honored one of its founding fathers with its first legislator of the year award.

State Rep. Michael Fortner was honored by members of the Metro West Council of Government this week at Elburn Lion Park in Elburn.

"He has a solid understanding of the issues which has informed his work in Springfield," said Mary Randle, the executive director of the non-profit group. "And he's one of our charter members."

Randle pointed to Fortner's efforts at lobbying for an improved regional transportation system while a state legislator, as well as his experience as mayor of West Chicago.

There, Fortner and several local leaders helped organize the Metro West Council. The group is made up of elected officials and municipal managers from several DuPage and Kane County communities who lobby state officials and meet regularly to update each other on the issues in the member communities.

"I take personal pride in this group," Fortner said. "The Metro West Council now gives several municipalities a clearinghouse to share what's going on in their towns."
