SPRINGFIELD -- A DuPage County state lawmaker was charged with drunken driving early Wednesday morning in Springfield.
State Rep. Bob Biggins, an Elmhurst Republican, was arrested and booked on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol at roughly 1 a.m. Wednesday on the capital city's north side at North Eighth Street and North Grand Avenue.
Springfield police confirmed the arrest, but would not release Biggins' blood-alcohol level or other information.
"I made a serious lapse in judgment and sincerely apologize to my family and those I represent who may be disappointed today," Biggins said in a statement provided to the Daily Herald. "I take full responsibility for my actions and will face any and all legal consequences."
Springfield Police Lt. Bob Markovic said he could not provide further details, citing the pending court case.
State lawmakers are in session this week trying to finalize a state budget and other issues before a May 31 deadline.
